About 97.2 Stray Fm

1.1:

97.2 Stray FM was born on the 4th of July 1994 after years of hard work and dedication from a band of local radio enthusiasts. The original Stray FM applied for and duly won the licence to broadcast to the Harrogate area. The station originally broadcast from Station Parade and later moved to its current home at Hornbeam Park in Harrogate.

Since its inception, 97.2 Stray FM has been an integral part of life in Harrogate and the surrounding areas – our news output provides the only daily source of information dedicated to this patch, reporting and reflecting the issues of the day. Our news service is the cornerstone to the whole output of the radio station.

We provide great music 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and offer differing genres at the weekend, thus enhancing choice (you will find these in our programme schedule.)

It’s no accident that our audience are loyal to us and believe 97.2 Stray FM to be THEIR radio station. We work hard at serving our community and providing a radio station that satisfies and reflects the needs of Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough and the surrounding areas.

Knaresborough Bed Race

Knaresborough has a world famous Bed Race every summer and this year 97.2 Stray Fm became its official media partner. We were physically part of the parade of floats through Knaresborough High Street with live programming throughout the day.

Local Heroes

As part of our continuing commitment to the area we serve we decided to search out those unsung heroes that make our communities' lives richer without ever seeking out recognition. We mounted a giant on air search for these people will hundreds of nominations reaching Stray FM by the closing date. We whittled these entries down painstakingly to 3 finalists in categories such as “Teacher of the Year”, “Super Mum or Dad of the Year”, “Make a Community Difference award” amongst many others. We invited these finalists to join us at Harrogate’s Cedar Court Hotel for a glitzy Hollywood style awards ceremony to honour their achievements. This amazing evening was attended by local MP Phil Willis, Civic Leaders and a host of other folk from all walks of life in our area.

St. Michael’s Hospice

The Hospice joined forces with 97.2 Stray FM to try and raise £1million in a year towards their running costs, over the next 12 months Stray FM and The Hospice will be working together on many Outside broadcasts and Initiatives to raise awareness and increase donations to the charity.

Harrogate International Festival

This year sees 97.2 Stray Fm become the official media Partner of the 2007 Harrogate International Festival providing information to visitors from all over the world as well as Outside Broadcasts and exclusive interviews with some of the famous people taking part.

3.3: Stray FM – Localism at its very best

The 97.2 Stray FM “Easter Egg Tree”

In the run up to Easter 2007 we encouraged our listeners to purchase one extra egg as they shopped to make sure that less fortunate children in our area received an Easter treat!

Local Heroes

Paying homage to the people in our community who make everyday life more special without wanting anything in return was one of the highlights of our broadcasting year. We assembled people from all walks of life to celebrate the best that the Harrogate district has to offer.

The Grand Summer Tour

Our mission was quite simple: Attend as many events in Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough and the surrounding area as possible this summer

We set up water stations on hot days! Our presenters worked the crowds and sold cakes at Fetes and Galas…. we have literally proudly been “serving” our area all summer.

Great Yorkshire Show / Nidderdale Show

We are proud of our roots across the Heart of Rural Yorkshire where agriculture is paramount to the local economy. As a result we were able to bring the countryside into the homes of our listeners as we broadcast live for 13 hours a day from this Years Great Yorkshire Show and Nidderdale Shows to show our own support for the area we live and work in.

St. Michael’s Hospice

One of the many local charities benefiting from Stray FM’s active policy of being part of the community. This year we have joined forces to try and help raise the £1.6million needed to keep the hospice going. The response has been phenonimal so far.

Inclement Weather

Floods hit the Heart of Yorkshire this summer causing more than enough problems for the community. Stray Fm abandoned it’s Programming Policy to concentrate on helping the communities affected, even resorting to Outside Broadcasts from buses in the floods at Knaresborough plus constant updating of problem spots in the worst hit areas.
