The 97.2 Stray FM Mayor's Blog!
The Mayor of Harrogate is the Chairman of the Borough Council and is the first citizen of the Borough of Harrogate. This is an appointment made by the Council each year in May and the Mayor chairs meetings of full Council as well as representing the Borough on ceremonial occasions. When he’s not too busy welcoming International Guests and supporting local charity events you’ll find him hosting formal and informal functions in the Mayor’s Parlour, the Council Chamber or other venues.
This year’s Mayor is Councillor John Fox and he is now a regular visitor to 97.2 Stray FM joining Chris on the Big Fun Breakfast where he’ll keep us up to date with what’s going on.
And you can find out what he’s been talking about on air by checking out the 97.2 Stray FM Mayor’s Blog here!
Mayor's Blog
The Mayor of Harrogate joined us again on the Big Fun Breakfast this morning, and here (as always) is his 'after show blog':
Mon 3rd Nov
Today the Mayor discussed various events which included:
Handprints Art Exhibition
Handprints are based at 68a High Street, Starbeck, Harrogate and provide support and training to adults with learning disabilities. Handprints art exhibition 2008 opens on Friday 7 November for one week. On Thursday 6 November 2008 the Mayor and Mayoress will be attending a preview evening. The preview evening is from 5.00pm to 8.30pm where original art – new work, artblox, canvass, framed, prints and Christmas cards can be viewed or purchased either at the preview or during the following open week until Friday 14 November 2008 (weekdays only) between the hours of 10.30am and 3.00pm. The Mayor encouraged Stray FM listeners to try and find time to call in to the Handprints art exhibition.
Young Carers’ Celebration of Music Concert
The Mayor invited Stray FM listeners to the Young Carers’ Celebration of Music Concert on Thursday 6 November 2008 at St John Fisher School, Hookstone Drive, Harrogate HG2 8PT at 7.15pm.
The concert has been organised by Christian Lunn, who is 16 and attends St John Fisher School and is himself a young carer for his mother with leukaemia and also his father. The North Yorkshire Community Foundation is sponsoring the concert and Christian is hoping to raise money to help local young carers.
Christian was quoted in the Harrogate Advertiser – “I get so much support from the Young Carers team at the Carers’ Resource I wanted to put on a concert to give them something back so that they can help other young carers in Harrogate”. Christian Lunn is a talented singer who got as far as the Boot Camp stage of a previous X Factor series.
Tickets are available in advance from the Carers Resource on 01423 500555 or the Music House, 18 Cheltenham Parade Harrogate and on the door.
Volunteering Oscars
On Friday 7 November 2008 the Mayor’s Volunteering Oscars will be Awarded at St George Hotel, Ripon Road, Harrogate HG1 2SY from 6.30pm. The Awards Ceremony will start at 7.00pm.
We have received lots of good nominations and the final awards will demonstrate the diverse work undertaken by volunteers throughout our district, by a wide range of people of all ages.
The Mayor encouraged Stray FM listeners to come to the Awards Ceremony and join the celebrations for all the work undertaken by volunteers in our district. The Mayor encouraged all Stray FM listeners who do not currently do any voluntary work to consider giving just a few hours per week. You might do voluntary work to train for new skills or new employment. You might volunteer just to make new friends. If you want more information on volunteering in our district contact the Volunteer Centres either in Harrogate on 504074 or Ripon 603631.
Annual Remembrance Day Service and Wreath Laying
The Mayor reminded Stray FM listeners that this Sunday is Remembrance Sunday, it is a time when we should all remember those who gave their lives not only in the First and Second World Wars but the wars our Service personnel have fought since the end of the Second World War. The Mayor and Mayoress will be attending the Annual Service at the Centotaph in Harrogate at 10.30am. The Mayor and Mayoress will attend the Annual Service of Remembrance Service at the Commonwealth War Graves at Stonefall Cemetry at 12.45pm. This service is organised by the Rotary Club of Harrogate Brigantes. The Mayoress will lay a Wreath on behalf of the Mayor of Wellington, New Zealand. There will be a fly past of a privately owned World War 2 DC3 Dakota aircraft at 12.55 pm. The Mayor and Mayoress will attend the Annual Service of Remembrance Service at the Starbeck Methodist Church and The War Memorial, Starbeck at 2.45pm
Fun Wine and Cheese Evening
The Mayor thanked everyone who attended the fun wine and cheese evening on Wednesday 22 October at the Majestic Hotel. All the money raised goes to the Mayor’s two charities: Carers’ Resource - don’t forget the 350+ young carers between the age of 7 and 18 who care for a loved one – and the Special Care Baby Unit and the Woodlands ward (Children’s Ward) at Harrogate District Hospital.
Over £1300 was raised on the evening.
‘Til the next time…
