A GP practice in Skipton has become dementia-friendly to improve care for all patients.

Dyneley House Surgery, on Newmarket Street, has been adapted to accommodate those affected by the condition.

According to the Alzheimer's Society, there are around 800,000 people in the UK with dementia.

By 2021, it's estimated there will be around one million people living with the condition.

Dyneley House has implemented new changes including full decoration of the patient waiting areas using contrasting paintwork between walls and doorways, solid colour carpets, displaying images of local scenes and familiar objects, installing a dementia-friendly clock with clear figures and date display, and contrasting toilet seats and light switches.

Practice Manager Antony Radley said: "We are really interested in supporting people locally with dementia and believe that we are the first GP practice to make these improvements for the benefit of patients with dementia.

"I am thrilled that a Craven practice is leading the way in this important area of patient care and we have worked closed with Dementia Action Alliance to implement the improvements and renovations. Their help has been invaluable.

"Some of these adaptations may seem quite simple to most of us, but for patients with dementia, they can make a huge difference in helping them to feel at ease, as well as safe and secure when they visit the surgery."

The changes are already making a difference to dementia patients, including 73-year-old Hazel Foster who was diagnosed with the condition a year ago.
