More women gearing up for Ilkley Cycle Races

It seems cycling stars like Otley's Lizzie Armitstead have inspired more women to take part in this year's Ilkley Cycle Races.

Organisers are expecting over 35 riders to feature in the AvantiGas women's race, which is a 25% increase on last year's inaugural event.

The 1.5km race, which starts on The Grove, is open to both elite cyclists and beginners.

Mike Firth, from event organisers Ilkley Cycling Club, said: "Last year was seen by many commentators as a breakout year for women's racing, with the inaugural five-stage Women's Tour and July's La Course in Paris at the end of the Tour de France.

"With the recent Tour de Yorkshire including a women's circuit race in York, significant steps are being made in building the profile of women's cycling, and we're absolutely delighted that AvantiGas is supporting the Ilkley event for the second year."
