Plans to introduce more on-street parking charges in Harrogate have been rejected by councillors.

The proposals include a flat rate of £2 during the evening and extending daytime charges to Sunday.

After fierce opposition from residents and businesses, an alternative proposal has suggested removing the evening charge and extending daytime charges from 6pm to 7pm.

It's claimed that the proposals will help to free up spaces which are currently used by motorists to park their cars overnight.

However, councillors called for North Yorkshire County Council's Executive to review the plans and come back with proposals which are based on evidence.

At a packed area committee meeting, Harrogate Borough Council also recommended that both authorities should agree a joint approach to on and off-street parking.
