A western bypass for Harrogate could be a step closer.

Members of North Yorkshire County Council's Executive have unanimously approved a draft transport plan for the next 30 years.

The plan will now be considered by the full council on 17 February.

Following a consultation, the authority has set out five key objectives:

  • Contributing to economic growth through reliable and efficient transport networks.
  • Improving road and transport safety.
  • Improving equality of opportunity by facilitating access to services.
  • Managing the adverse impact of transport on the environment.
  • Providing healthier transport opportunities.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Highways and Public Transport, on whether a Harrogate bypass could finally happen:

The transport plan also includes improvements to the A1 and an A59 extension which avoids Kex Gill between Harrogate and Skipton.

It's hoped that funding could be obtained through the Government's Northern Powerhouse proposals.
