Stray FM has announced its backing for independent local restaurants in Harrogate.

Throughout September, Eat Local Month will see Stray FM offering deals and publicising businesses on-air and online.

It comes after some popular local eateries recently closed their doors, whilst others have reported difficulties from increased competition, caused in part by an influx of larger chain restaurants in the town.

Sarah Barry, Stray FM's Managing Director, said: "We've launched this great new initiative called Eat Local Month through September.

"Through the Food and Drink Show, radio, social media, all our multi-platforms, we're going to get behind local independent restaurants, giving lots of offers, lots of vouchers and really encouraging the people of the town and the district to come out and eat local.

"We're investing thousands of pounds ourselves in helping to promote these restaurants."

A number of celebrity chefs have also offered their support.

Si Myers, one half of the Hairy Bikers, welcomed the campaign.

He said: "To continue the wonderful diversity and difference in food that we have in our country, it needs support.

"Big chains are one thing, but that's big business.

"Local families that are making local food with local knowledge and are independent - patronise them, make sure that you go, because it's incredibly important."
