The Conservatives have held the seat of Skipton and Ripon at the General Election.

Julian Smith was re-elected with a majority of more than 20,000, after taking a total of 36,425 votes.

Labour finished second, securing 16,440 votes.

The Green Party candidate took 3,734, with the Yorkshire Party winning 1,539.

Turnout was at 74.4%.

Mr Smith told Stray FM: "I hoped it would go my way, but as we've seen tonight, we saw in the referendum last year, we've seen now multiple times in different countries, politics is in a state of change.

"You can take nothing for granted.

"I was hoping for a good result but never ever took it as a certainty."

Across the country, the Conservatives performed worse than anticipated, with talks under way over who can form the next Government.

Mr Smith said: "I think it will be an interesting few days. Hopefully we'll be the largest party. We're not where we hoped to be.

"We've just got to make sure we get into a position where we get stability for the country and I'll play my part in making sure that happens."
