"The club have never been higher": Reaction to Harrogate Town's play-off triumph

The celebrations may just be continuing this morning as Harrogate Town toast their historic promotion.

3000 fans saw the side triumph 3-0 in the Vanarama National league play-off final against Brackley Town yesterday at the CNG Stadium.

The club will start next season in the fifth tier of English football for the first time ever.

Scorer of Town's third goal, Joe Leesley, said:

"I think it's massive and it's a brilliant club, we deserve it.

"The fans have been fantastic this year, we've doubled the attendances and there were 3000 in here today.

"We would like to have been champions but there's no better way to win it than in a one game play-off."

Harrogate Town can now look forward to competing on the same level as famous football names like Chesterfield, Hartlepool, Leyton Orient and Wrexham.

Reflecting on what lies ahead, Manager Simon Weaver said:

"We've known that the club have never been higher - than even top spot in this league - so it's a completely different challenge.

"There are massive clubs.

"But you know what? With that crowd behind us, hopefully they can drive us on again and we can do alright."
