LISTEN: What do people make of Knaresborough's new Bond End?

Campaigners say there's still work to do at Knaresborough's Bond End junction.

  • It follows the completion of county council improvement works
  • The scheme replaced traffic lights with two mini roundabouts
  • Whilst drivers have largely welcomed the change, campaigners say a 20mph speed limit should also be introduced

The improvement work was completed on schedule and the two new roundabouts are now fully open to traffic.

The scheme was undertaken by North Yorkshire County Council to address air quality concerns as the annual target level for nitrogen dioxide, which mostly comes from traffic pollution, had been exceeded.

We asked people in Knaresborough what they thought of the change, and most told us they thought it was working well:

However, campaigners say more needs to be done to reduce pollution.

Shan Oakes, from Harrogate and District Green Party said:

"The High Street and all around should be 20mph, and it should be enforced.

"It looks as though it's working well. I think what we now need is for pedestrians to feel confident, because I think there's such a history of people feeling they should rush across the road.

"I think signage needs to be stronger and we've got to make the traffic go slower."

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, executive member for highways, said:

"People still need to think about how they travel and whether alternative means of transport are available for their journey, but the early signs at the junctions are good. Drivers have given positive responses to the new arrangements and residents have spoken highly of the contractors, PBS Construction, who worked efficiently and with great consideration.

"We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this project."
