Trade Union Bill: "no place in modern democracy"

Trade Union Bill: "no place in modern democracy"

Trade union representatives in North Yorkshire are hitting out at Government reforms during a week of action.

Members of UNISON have been raising awareness of the 'Heart Unions' campaign at Harrogate Railway Station.

It sets out their opposition to the Trade Union Bill, as well as celebrating the work of unions and their role in the workplace.

The Government wants to impose a minimum 50% turnout in strike ballots, which it says is necessary to stop repeated threats of industrial action.

However, UNISON claims that this will undermine the right to strike and damage core union activities in the workplace.

North Yorkshire Branch Secretary Wendy Nichols said: "The Trade Union Bill has no place in a modern democracy.

"Only through coming together and showing our united strength will we be able defend this bill."
