Plans to bring Marks and Spencer back to Ripon appear to have the backing of local businesses.

A survey carried out by the Chamber of Trade suggests that 90% of members are in favour of the development.

Land on Rotary Way has been identified for several retail units.

Stephen Craggs, Vice Chairman of the Chamber of Trade, believes that the development would benefit the city as a whole.

He told Stray FM: "I'm an electrical retailer, and when we came into Ripon 12 years ago, there were already eight electrical retailers here - we're the only one left. I'd much rather have eight back. It makes the city more vibrant. The more retailers the better.

"We struggle for anything much more than 1,000 to 1,500 square feet, which is just not appealing to the larger retailers. We do need the square footage, it can't come into town, so it has to locate elsewhere. If it's inside Ripon, then all well and good."
