Harrogate Borough Council is reviewing its council tax single person discount.

The 25% reduction is claimed when there is only one adult living in a property.

A change in circumstances can mean that people aren't claiming the discount when they are eligible or are claiming it when they are no longer entitled to it.

There are more than 22,000 households across the Harrogate District currently receiving the discount.

The council is carrying out checks to make sure that the information that it holds is up to date and accurate.

Where it believes that someone may be claiming incorrectly, the council will contact them for more information.

Councillor Richard Cooper, Leader of Harrogate Borough Council, said: "We want to help people keep more of their own money. Sometimes circumstances can change which make some people eligible for a discount, but they don't realise it. This could be because of a bereavement or separation - times when the council cax is far from the front of someone's mind. It may be that the kids have left home. Equally, circumstances may change in the other direction and eligibility for the discount is over.

"If your circumstances have changed, please contact the council and we can let you know if you are still eligible for the discount.

"Alternatively, if you think you should be entitled to receive the single person discount but are not claiming it, then I'd encourage you to get in touch with us as soon as possible."

Anyone who thinks they may be entitled to the single person discount, or currently receives it and their circumstances have changed, should call 01423 500600 or e-mail ben_rev@harrogate.gov.uk
