Pateley Bridge is hoping that its High Street will be named as Britain's best.

The town has entered the Great British High Street competition, which celebrates the work being done to boost business in villages, towns and cities.

Last year's contest saw a record-breaking 230 entries and attracted over 200,000 public votes, with Bishopthorpe Road in York being crowned the overall winner.

There are several categories and this year's shortlist will be announced in October.

As well as cash prizes, winners will receive dedicated support and mentoring from industry experts, ranging from one-to-one coaching to advice on digital marketing.

Internet giant Google will also give winners training on how to make the most of their digital skills.

Nidderdale Chamber of Trade, which submitted the entry for Pateley Bridge, has introduced initiatives including window stickers to encourage visitors to go into business premises and ask for information about the area.

It's also organised successful events such as the annual 1940s Weekend, along with hanging baskets, colourful bunting to decorate the High Street and the website www.nidderdale.co.uk

Chairman Keith Tordoff said: "Pateley Bridge High Street is a vital part of our whole community, benefiting the local residents through attracting visitors whose spending in the local area helps sustain the fantastic and varied range of businesses we are still fortunate enough to have.

"There is a real positive feel in Pateley Bridge and this competition will help not only put us on this country's map, but will also help generate new creativity and hopefully innovation for the area.

"It is fantastic that we are now in the competition and we are asking that people who are passionate about Pateley go on social media to use hashtags #GBHighSt and #PateleyBridge which will raise our profile and this will be considered by the judges, resulting hopefully in our entry being successful.

"Come on people who love Pateley Bridge, we already know we have the best High Street, so let's give the town the recognition it deserves and make it Britain's best High Street!"
