Autumn Statement includes funding for flood protection

The Government has promised funding for flood protection measures along the River Wharfe.

In his Autumn Statement, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced that £2 million will be made available to help protect homes in Otley and other communities including Pool-in-Wharfedale.

The investment is being welcomed by local MP Greg Mulholland.

He said: "In April, I secured a meeting with the Floods Minister and made the case for why this funding was needed, following the serious flooding on Boxing Day last year, and I am pleased that the Government have listened.

"I will now be seeking a further meeting with the Minister to ask when and how this money will be spent and when flood protection and prevention measures will be put in place. After two serious floods on the River Wharfe last year, and already with flood warnings issued this winter for the valley, this investment needs to be made as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, the Treasury says the Chancellor has put infrastructure and productivity in Yorkshire "at the heart" of his Autumn Statement.

Philip Hammond set out how local areas will benefit from the Government's continued commitment to devolution and said that a new "tailored approach" to regional productivity will be unveiled in due course.

He also talked about the next steps for the Northern Powerhouse strategy, which include dualling major roads across the Pennines to help commuters and speed up the movement of goods.

Local Enterprise Partnerships will receive a share of the £556 million of Growth Deal funding across the Northern Regions for projects which create jobs.

In addition, £24 million will go towards hosting the Road World Championships in 2019 and cycling infrastructure as part of a legacy fund.

Mr Hammond says the Government has "great ambitions" for the North of England.

He added: "This Autumn Statement sets out how we will support our economy as we begin writing a new chapter in our country's history.

"It signals our support for millions of hardworking families who are struggling to make ends meet and our determination to ensure every household has opportunity to share in the nation's prosperity.

"This is an Autumn Statement which delivers for Yorkshire and the Humber."
