Harrogate and Knaresborough's MP says he will keep up the pressure on Northern rail bosses to make sure that new trains are introduced as soon as possible.

Andrew Jones, who is also Transport Minister, is responding to criticism from some passengers that they haven't seen any improvements since Arriva Rail North took over the franchise last year.

It's promised to transform the network through a £1 billion investment, including state-of-the-art trains with a top speed of 100mph, refurbishing the existing fleet and introducing more frequent services.

Speaking about the wait for improvements, Mr Jones told Stray FM: "I know that people are frustrated about this and they're right to be. I am as well, I use the trains every week and our rolling stock isn't good enough, but we can definitely say that the new rolling stock is on the way.

"This takes a while to happen, simply because it takes a while to build trains, but as they come off production lines, they will be coming into service, I think by the end of this year, certainly during next year and the completion of the rollover into the new rolling stock by 2019.

"The changes which we'll be seeing locally will be a mixture of new rolling stock and doubling the frequency of the service, which should add together to mean a significant step change for the whole service."

Mr Jones has also reiterated the Government's message that annual fare increases will help pay for the biggest rail modernisation programme in more than a century.
