People in a village near Harrogate have celebrated the official opening of their new shop, post office and café.

The project started more than a year ago, after Darley lost its original shop and other local services.

Elderly and vulnerable people are also benefiting from a meals on wheels service, Darley Good Neighbours, which launched in February this year.

Volunteer drivers deliver two-course meals prepared at the café using fresh, local ingredients two days each week.

The official opening took place last Saturday, with Councillor Anne Jones, the Mayor of Harrogate, doing the honours.

Project manager Helen Flynn said: "I can hardly believe now that, as a community, we made this happen over a year ago. It took a lot of hard work, dedication, innovation and fundraising to get this project off the ground. But it has been worth it.

"The shop, PO and café is the buzzing community hub that we all hoped it would be.

"It would not have been possible to get to where we are without a lot of help and support. Particular thanks go to Steve Willis, who took on the lease to run the business and has done such a great job. Also great thanks to all our funders whose names are on a plaque to commemorate their fabulous contributions!"
