Organisers of the sixth Harrogate Christmas Market say it's been the most successful event yet.

It featured 200 stalls offering a wide range of Christmas gifts, as well as food and drink from all over Yorkshire and musical entertainment.

There was even a marriage proposal, with singer-songwriter Den Miller and violinist Sophie Hawke being drafted in to perform the couple's favourite song with suitably amended lyrics.

The prospective groom, Paul Finch, went down on one knee to propose and, after wiping away tears of happiness, his future wife, Helen, happily accepted.

Market visitors and traders gave the couple a resounding round of applause and offered their congratulations.

It's estimated that 75,000 people visited over the four days, including passengers on 145 coaches from all over the UK.

For the first time, organisers decided to recognise traders whose stalls stood out from the crowd, with many receiving gold or silver certificates, or being 'Highly Commended'.

Main organiser Brian Dunsby said: "The Harrogate Christmas Market has a high retention of quality traders, with two thirds of this year's traders having had stalls here before and one third being new traders, which helps to refresh the range of goods, food and drink on sale."

Vice Chairman Steve Scarre said there was a high level of interest on social media and he also praised the "excellent efforts" of the volunteer 'Market Makers' who helped traders to set up their stalls and take breaks during the four days.

The overwhelming majority of traders are hoping to return next year, when the market will be on Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 November.
