The upmarket northern supermarket chain Booths, which has branches in Ripon, Ilkley and Settle, has reportedly been put up for sale.

The Sunday Times says the retailer has brought in advisers from an investment bank to consider bids.

The business has been owned by the same family for five generations, with the first store opened in Blackpool by the tea dealer Edwin Henry in 1847.

Booths' Ilkley branch is situated on the former Victorian gasworks site off Leeds Road and was recognised with a commendation in the Bradford District Design Awards in 2002.

The retailer opened its Ripon store, its third in Yorkshire, on Marshall Way in June 2009.

In a statement, a spokeswoman said: "Booths has been retailing for over 170 years and it remains a very strong, resilient and well-loved brand.

"One of our strengths has been our ability to adapt to changing market conditions."
