What NOT to do in a job interview

When you're searching for a job, being offered an interview can feel like a mixed blessing. On the one hand, you're that much closer to being employed, but on the other, you've got to nail the interview first.

Nobody knows a good interview like a recruitment agency, so HQ Personnel have let us in on some of the biggest pitfalls people make so that you don't have to.

1) Be prepared. Research the company you'd like to work for, make sure you know about their ethos, their key people, and their aims. A recruitment agency will often supply you with all the information you need beforehand, to give you the best possible chance of getting hired.

2) Don't forget the basics. There's so much information out there, it's easy to overthink and forget simple things, like making eye contact and having a good, firm handshake - without crushing anybody's hand!

3) Don't lie! Obviously, you'll want to put yourself in the best possible light, and it's important to make your achievements sound great. However, if you go too far in your exaggeration, and get caught out later on, you'll put yourself in a bad light. Be proud, but be truthful.

4) Don't dress down. Obviously it depends on the work place, but even somewhere with a casual dress code will be impressed if you turn up looking smartly dressed. It's better to over-impress than to underwhelm.

5) Don't slate previous employers. It's OK to say what you didn't enjoy in your last role or workplace, but keep it professional.

6) End the interview well. Ask the interviewer if they have any reservations about you, so you have a chance to address them while you're still in the interview. Have some thoughtful questions prepared for the end of the interview, and don't be afraid to follow up if you don't hear anything in the expected time frame.

With the right recruiter on your side, you'll be well prepared for your interview, and hopefully land the job.
