Couples can start a conversation and discover together more about the hopes and needs of their financial future thanks to a simple board game concept developed by Harrogate-based finance and lifestyle planner.

  • Split into four key areas, the board game launched by bdb Financial is opening the discussion for local people on the wants and needs of their future.
  • bdb Financial has been helping people look after their finances in order to lead secured and fulfilled lives since 2006.
  • They are also aiming to improve the education and understanding of handling money in children and young adults thanks to 'Financial Wellbeing' sessions ran with local schools.

The bdb Financial board game

Split into four key areas of conversation, the innovative game is simple yet effective.

It is designed to open up the conversation amongst families and couples on what is important to them both now and in the future.

What would your family put into each of the following areas?

  • What do you NEED to spend money on NOW?
  • What do you WANT to spend money on NOW?
  • What do you NEED to spend money on in the FUTURE?
  • What do you WANT to spend money on in the FUTURE?

What would your familly or spouse put into each category? Would you feel the same?

The team at bdb Financial would be happy to talk to you and your family about the board game and how they could help you.

Should children and young adults have more education on handling money?

Stray FM went out to ask local people what they thought about discussing money openly either as a whole or specifically within their family unit, and these were some of the reactions:

"I will only talk about money with my wife... because she's my partner and I tell her everything confidential."

"I think when I was at school, and I'm 36 now, people weren't really taught much about money... I think as a parent I'm more conscious about teaching my daughter the value of money."

"I think it's good if children do know about money, especially if they go to university. It's a whole new world and in days gone by they didn't realise what they were getting into."

"We've always been quite open, the kids have always been quite open, always let me know if they've got problems or if things are going well, so we don't really have any issues... we knew they couldn't afford their wedding so we helped out with that."

"They need to know more about national insurance and pension contributions and all that gets get deducted from your salary. They also need to know about the costs of running a home which I don't think a lot of them do until they actually get one."

Andrew Brook-Dobson, the Managing Director of bdb Financial based in Harrogate, understands the importance of getting children and young adults to know more about handling money.

As a parent with four children, he understands the situation from a variety of angles.

"Whether it's spending money on an app or with a phone or a contactless card, it doesn't help young people really get a grasp of the scarcity element of money.

"The other thing we're doing because we think this is so important is some initiatives with schools locally. We see people coming out of school without sufficient financial education and we want to help change that, and we're partnering with schools locally, both junior and senior to help address that."

What is bdb Financial in Harrogate?

Set up in 2006, bdb Financial begun helping people to look after their finances and securing their futures.

But as time went on, the team realised that whilst protecting your money and ensuring you have enough is important, actually leading happy, meaningful lives with that money is more important.

bdb Financial is based on Hornbeam Park in Harrogate.
