'At The Movies' theme for Ilkley Carnival

'At The Movies' theme for Ilkley Carnival

Paparazzi are at the ready for this year's Ilkley Carnival, as the theme is officially announced as 'At The Movies'.

The theme was revealed at llkley Cinema, with event organisers hoping to see The Grove transformed into a red carpet complete with film stars as part of the annual parade.

Ilkley Carnival Committee Chairman Andrew Stacey said: "Last year's 'Best of British' theme was a huge hit, but we are confident that 'At The Movies' has the potential to inspire an even greater array of costumes given the number of movie genres that exist.

"The theme announcement is only the start of our countdown to the May event and we are planning to draw an even bigger crowd into the town this year. Last year we had over 10,000 visitors and this year we're aiming to increase that figure yet again."

In 2016, more than £10,000 was raised by the Ilkley Carnival, which was split between primary beneficiaries, Aware (Airedale and Wharfedale Autism Resource), Ilkley Christchurch Scouts and Ilkley Cricket Club, with the rest being shared among other good causes in the local community.

Ilkley Carnival has grown over the years, with the introduction of the vintage car show, the Black Hats and White Hats cricket competition and last year's visit from Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Andrew added: "Ilkley Carnival simply wouldn't be possible without our sponsors and volunteers and couldn't raise such fantastic funds for local good causes without everyone's support.

"It costs thousands to organise and hundreds of hours to actually make it happen - we are looking for a primary sponsor this year who will benefit from the thousands of pounds worth of free media exposure that the event secures every year. We'd love to hear from businesses, organisations and individuals who feel they can help make this the town's best ever carnival."

Ilkley Carnival is going to be held on Monday 1 May and will get under way with the parade starting at 11am on The Grove and ending at the showground at East Holmes Field, where headline acts, children's activities, a fairground and local stalls will entertain visitors.

All profits raised go back into the local community and beneficiary applications are welcome.
