The 10 Rules of Regifting

Regifting presents at Christmas

Published at 12:41pm 17th November 2017.

So you received something last year you couldn't stand, something you already have, or something that you can make good use of. You smiled and said thank you (you are British after all), but ever since that moment it's sat unopened in a cupboard somewhere. Then the dreaded December starts to creep around again, and you know what the options are. You have 18 people to buy for (officially the average number of gifts people in Yorkshire have to buy at Christmas time) and before you know it the cost is rising, time is passing by and your ideas are limited. So... how do you feel about regifting?

Regifting, the art of passing off unwanted to gifts to other more well receiving friends, family and colleagues, can save you time, money and clutter. But it's important you get it right.

10 Rules of Regifting

  1. The gift must suit them - your Uncle George might not appreciate the ladies perfume set.
  2. Remove the name tag - it's the embarrassing ultimate give away.
  3. Don't re-gift from the people you really love - imagine how happy it would make your Granny to see that potted plant she bought you in pride of place somewhere.
  4. Don't re-gift thoughtful gifts - your grandparents china, a family heirloom or a handmade item for example.
  5. Don't gift within a friend circle - Your mate Kath will probably be there when you hand over Kath's gift from last year to your mate Sophie. And even if she doesn't, Sophie will probably tell Kath next time they go for a coffee. It's not worth the agro or worry.
  6. Beware of the gift that's regifted and regifted and regifted - to be safe, assume everything has already been regifted at least once, you're only ever one step away form the original gifter!
  7. Do it sooner rather than later - fashions, styles and trends don't stay the same. Regifting an item from 2009 might be obvious.
  8. Don't re-gift all at once - the more you do it, the harder it is to remember what came from who.
  9. Re-wrap the re-gift - fresh wrapping paper goes a long way
  10. Or just be honest? If you do end up in an embarrassing situation honesty is always the best policy.

So with all those tips in mind, you should be safe to embrace the art of regifting this festive season.
