The ads are on the telly, the fireworks are out and the songs are in the shops - Christmas is nearly here, so it's time to switch on those lights!

For many it's the first real sign of the festive season, as we come together to illuminate the main streets of the towns and villages across North and West Yorkshire.

So, here's a handy guide to where you can get switched on to the season of being jolly:

Harrogate

Thursday 16th November 4-6pm
The Piazza, Victoria Shopping Centre

Christmas officially begins in Harrogate with the Big Switch-On of the Christmas Lights on Thursday 16th November.

The build-up starts at 4pm on the Victoria Centre Piazza, Station Parade, sponsored by Harrogate company CNG and hosted by Stray FM.

Father Christmas will be making a very special appearance and will be joined by a whole host of local talent this year, including talented singer-songwriters Becky Bowe and Thomas Teago. Characters from Harrogate Theatre's pantomime, Beauty and the Beast, will entertain the crowds, as will the ever-popular Rascals Entertainment.

We'll also announce the winners of our annual shop window competition live on stage.

Then Father Christmas will join the Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate, Councillor Anne Jones, at 6pm to press the button and switch on the spectacular new Christmas lights.

After the Big Switch On, a candle-lit procession will lead to St Peter’s Church on Cambridge Street for a short carol service starting at 6.15pm. Everyone is welcome to join us there.
