Special Christmas service to remember the fallen at Harrogate war graves

Published at 12:55pm 3rd December 2018.

A special service is being planned in Harrogate this Christmas to honour those who lost their lives in the first and second world wars.

  • A Christmas Remembrance will take place on Sunday 23rd December at the war graves at Stonefall Cemetery
  • It starts at 4.30pm
  • A candle will be placed on each war grave
  • Local school children will be taking part and organisers say anyone is welcome

There will also be an opportunity for people to make donations to Help For Heroes.

Event organiser Benji Walker said:

"What I want to do is lay a candle on every grave, and there's around a thousand graves.

"I'd just like as much support as possible so donations of the candles  and people to come and pay their respects."

Benji says she was inspired by her own family history and similar events held in other countries.

She added:

"It's quite a big thing in Europe. There's a big cemetery in Holland where the children go every Christmas Eve and lay a candle on all the graves.

"I just thought it was such a lovely idea, and of course we've just had the 100 year anniversary of the First World War."

If you'd like to help with the event email christmasremembrance@gmail.com or search A Christmas Remembrance on Facebook.

Anyone is welcome to attend the event on Sunday 23rd December at 4.30pm.
