Special Christmas service will honour the fallen at Harrogate war graves today

Published at 8:01am 23rd December 2018.

A special service is taking place in Harrogate today to honour those who lost their lives in the first and second world wars.

  • A Christmas Remembrance at the war graves at Stonefall Cemetery
  • It starts at 4.30pm
  • A candle will be placed on each war grave
  • Local school children will be taking part and organisers say anyone is welcome

There will also be an opportunity for people to make donations to Help For Heroes.

Event organiser Benji Walker says she was inspired by her own family history and similar events held in other countries.

Benji said:

"It's quite a big thing in Europe. There's a big cemetery in Holland where the children go every Christmas Eve and lay a candle on all the graves.

"I just thought it was such a lovely idea, and of course we've just had the 100 year anniversary of the First World War."

For more information search A Christmas Remembrance on Facebook.

Anyone is welcome to attend the service this afternoon at 4.30pm.
