School near Otley set to close

Governors at Farnley Primary School have agreed to close it from 31 December.

Their decision follows concerns over standards and falling pupil numbers.

In 2014, the school was found to be 'inadequate' by Ofsted inspectors and placed into special measures.

In June this year, governors decided to consult over the proposed closure.

Since then, they have worked closely with North Yorkshire County Council and the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales.

Families previously on the school roll have been found alternative places.

Two children are still on the roll, but they have been offered places at another school.

The school closure plans will now be formally published so that interested parties can make comments.

County Councillor Arthur Barker, North Yorkshire's Executive Member for Schools, said: "We do understand how difficult it is when numbers on roll fall below what is educationally as well as financially viable.

"The governing body, the County Council and the Diocese have been determined to act in the best interests of the children."

Campaigners opposing the closure say they're "extremely disappointed" and have warned that it will put even more demand on school places in Otley.
