A Harrogate secondary school is appealing for the community's help to find a former student.

St Aidan's has come across a copy of an article which was in the Harrogate Herald dated 16 March 1966.

It shows Helen Campbell, Head Girl of St Peter's Secondary School, and Raymond Long, Head Boy of Christ Church Secondary Boys School, preparing to cut the first sod on the site of the new St Aidan's School in 1966.

The foundation stone marking the start of the building is still by the school's main entrance.

To mark 50 years since work started, the school decided to track down the two students who cut the first sod.

The school has already found Helen Campbell, who is now living in Leicester.

She hopes to visit the school at the beginning of June.

However, so far, headteacher John Wood has struggled to find any more information about Raymond Long.

He said: "If anyone in the area knew anything about him, if anyone knew any relatives or any means of contacting him, we would be very grateful.

"It's part of our history, it's part of out tradition and those two students were obviously selected from the two schools that merged together into St Aidan's.

"We just thought it would be a nice piece of history to welcome them back, have a look at the school and compare stories."
