Harrogate children enjoy cookery with local chefs

Primary school in Harrogate has been receiving cookery lessons from local head chef educating them on taste, food preparation and hospitality.

Recent research has shown that for parents in the UK, only 1 in 5 parents with children aged 4 to 12 regularly cook meals with their children

But with ongoing encouragement for healthy eating, it can be argued that food education needs to be more prominent for young children.

Pupils from Willow Tree Primary School in Harrogate have been lucky enough to participate in a three-part series of cookery classes recently.

The classes are hosted by chefs from the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Harrogate as part of the 'Adopt A School' scheme they're part of.

Three different sessions have been, or will be, educating the children on a variety of topics:

  1. The 5 taste sensations - bitter, sweet, sour, salty and umami (savoury)
  2. Knife skills - preparing a cous cous salad
  3. Hospitality - laying a table and hosting guests

The first and second sessions have already been completed and the third will be done this Spring.

Later in the year, the children involved will attend a 'chef graduation' at the Crowne Plaza Hotel congratulating them on their hard work.
