Nominations have opened for this year's Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards.

They recognise extraordinary youngsters across the region, with categories including Outstanding Bravery, Fundraiser, Young Carer and Sporting Achievement.

Previous winners, sponsors and other supporters gathered for the official launch of the Awards at the Headingley Experience in Leeds.

The party was compered by Kate Hardcastle, who was joined by Eddie Gray, Gary Hetherington and Jamie Jones-Buchanan.

Once again, Yorkshire favourites the Chuckle Brothers are Ambassadors, but were unable to attend the launch party because Paul was recovering from broken ribs.

The Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards are organised by the St. James's Place Foundation.

Stephen Mitchell, who is the Leeds representative, said: "It's not a financial reward or anything like that, but to see the faces and the appreciation, not just of the children, but their families and their friends, it's just marvellous and that's what I love about it."

Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards - Caroline, Oscar and Simon Day

Oscar Day who was honoured at the 2016 Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards

One of last year's Special Recognition awards was presented to four-year-old Oscar Day from Knaresborough.

He was born at 29 weeks and has severe cerebral palsy, which means that he's unable to sit, walk or speak.

His mum, Caroline, said: "It's amazing how many of these children go unspoken and actually they deserve it just as much as Oscar did last year, so absolutely go for it and vote for them."

Oscar's dad, Simon, added: "You sometimes become a little bit used to it, but then to see people say what he does goes above and beyond what you'd expect from children really was inspiring and touching. To think that other people think of your child in that way is really moving."

Once again, Stray FM is a proud supporter of the Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards.
