27th November to 1st December 2017 is National Cohabitation Week and if you're one half of an unmarried couple who live together there may be some things worth thinking about. No 1 Solicitors, a family law firm with an office in Harrogate, have some advice.

It's never the most romantic topic to bring to the table during the early stages of a relationship or when you're about to move in together, but in the eventuality of a separation would you or your other half know who is financially entitled to what?

Unmarried couples do not have the same rights as married couples - ignore the myth of common law marriage. And with marriage rates on the decline it's probably something you should know a little more about.

Property disputes is the most common issue, and for homeowners sometimes it's not as simple as which name is on the paperwork. Complications such as where money for the house deposit came from, who paid bills and mortgage payments, and also how home improvements were funded can all come into consideration when asking the question of who deserves what.

In the same way that every relationship is different, so are the situations in which separation can be dealt with, but if you find yourself in trouble with regards to cohabitation agreements and family law issues the team at No. 1 Solicitors could help you get some answers. They offer a free consulation which can arrange here.

Beth Parsons from Stray FM's Family Show talked to Ehsan Kabir from No 1 Solicitors about cohabiting unmarried couples and how they can protect themselves and their assets.
