Traditional nativity plays at Christmas time in schools have been on the decline over the past 20 years but the children of Highfield Prep School at Harrogate Ladies College were keen to put on a show for their parents and teachers.

Christmas is one of the times that parents (grandparents, aunties, uncles and siblings too!) get to see what goes on during school times, as they're welcomed into the school of their little one to watch classes of children act, dance and sing their way through a festive performance.

With many schools now opting for a less traditional Christmas play, Highfield Prep School, part of Harrogate Ladies College, decided to stick with the well known biblical story of Mary, a donkey and a cosy stable. Whilst it may be a Christian story, the multi-faith school sees this as part of religious education, teaching children to respect and understand all faiths.

But no matter what the story being told, performing on stage in front of an audience builds confidence, improves public speaking and encourages music and drama skills.

Accompanying the Christmas shows, the children from Highfield Prep School also sung in Harrogate at the White Hart Hotel and at Goldsborough Hall, raising money for Candlelighters their chosen charity.

Alice Sofield went to meet the children of Highfield Prep School, Head of Drama Leslie Lloyd and Head of Music Claire Gray at Harrogate Ladies College ahead of their Christmas nativity.
