How can playing sport help those who suffer from depression? Local girl 17 year old Chloe Bellerby who plays for Harrogate Town AFC tells her story of battling issues with mental health.

Every year approximately 1 in 4 people will experience mental health issues in the UK. And with the subject becoming more and more talked about, finding what support works and who can benefit from it is vital.

No one is exempt. Young people can be affected...

17 year old Chloe Bellerby from Harrogate has had a particularly difficult last three years.

"It is fair to say that my own life has been turned upside down by mental illness, the diagnosis of depression has made my day-to-day life a genuine struggle. It’s exhausting, mentally and physically tiring and sometimes even getting through the day is a challenge in itself. Mental illness takes over your life and turns you into a person that doesn’t want to socialise, doesn’t want to speak to anyone, knows no other way of dealing with things than harming yourself and it changes your mind-set in such a way that you feel there is no other option than to end your own life."

But with the support of close friends, family, teachers at Rossett School and her football team at Harrogate Town AFC Chloe has come out stronger and is now keen to raise awareness and help others who are going through depression or other mental health problems.

Playing sport, for many people, can provide relief in many aspects. Particularly in team sports such as football the team work, the release of endorphins and the emotions following a good game can all add to helping those going through depression.

Ir order to help others in the future, Chloe is walking from Leeds to London in 10 days in April with the aim of raising £10,000 for chairty Mind. You can donate to Mind for Chloe's Leeds to London walk here.
