How much of what children learn should be done in the classroom and how much should be done outdoors? The students at the Pre-School of Harrogate Ladies College are exploring the possibilities.

Remember your childhood? It's likely you played hide and seek, rolled down the grassy hills in Summer and if you were lucky rode on your bike!

It's no secret that nowadays we are getting busier and busier. This could lead to less chance for children to entertain themselves, create imaginary play and make the most of trees, leaves, muddy puddles and the great outdoors.

So the teachers at Highfield Pre-School, part of Harrogate Ladies College, are keen to make sure it still happens.

And (despite what the youngsters might think) it's not only playing which is happening during outdoor time. Finding sticks and counting them? That's maths. Talking about how mud is made from soil and rain? That's science. Describing the what they can hear and see? That's English.
