Cohabiting couples are the fastest growing family type in the UK, but not being married or having the correct agreements in place can come with risks. Newtons Solicitors have advice.

In Yorkshire and the Humber there are currently  148,400 cohabiting couples without children and 130,800 cohabiting couple with dependent children, a figure which is growing rapidly.

So what is Cohabitation?

Cohabitation is when two people who are not married live together. Whether they have children or financial ties is irrelevant.

There is sometimes a misconception on something called ‘common-law’ marriage, meaning some people believe they will automatically have rights. This is not the case and is not recognised in court.

So what would happen in the relationship broke down or someone died?

It's never an easy thing to think about and, let's be honest, not the most romantic start to a relationship, but if you don't ensure you're in agreement with your other half, things could get messy later on, potentially putting your financial stability, property or children at risk.

There are range of options that you can take though if you are part of a cohabiting couple and family lawyers Newtons Solicitors would be happy to help.
