Divorce: A Blame Game

Current law means that getting a divorce requires some element of blame. But could no fault divorce be on the way?

If a married couple or those in a civil partnership wish to get divorced, legalities state that there must be a blame. This could be unreasonable behavior or adultery for example.

If this can't happen couples could be in for a wait of two to five years before divorce proceeding can begin.

But as is the case with many separations, what if two people have simply grown apart and don't want to point the finger?

Local lawyers Newtons Solicitors can help couples with advice on how to move divorce forward with the least amount of blame and as amicably as possible.

Could no fault divorce be possible in the future?

Movements are in place for it to become possible, but unfortunately for those wishing to pursue a divorce without blaming their spouse it's not going to happen anytime soon.

A campaign is in place and many family lawyers, including Julie Fawcett from Newtons Solicitors, are part of the Resolution group which is putting the argument forward to legalise no fault divorce

Beth Parsons from Stray FM's Family Show talked to Julie Fawcett from Newtons Solicitors about the possibilities of avoiding a blame game divorce.
