Fundraising drive to support vulnerable new mums in Harrogate

A charitable initiative providing essential items to vulnerable new mothers in Harrogate has launched a fundraising campaign so it can help more families in the region.

Since being set up two years ago, Baby Basics Harrogate has supported over 100 mothers struggling with the financial and practical aspect of looking after a new baby.

Working with health professionals, Baby Basics gifts Moses baskets packed with donated nappies, wipes, clothes, towels, blankets as well as toiletries and treats for mums.

It provides essentials and equipment to mothers and families who are unable to provide these items for themselves; including but not limited to teenage mums, people seeking asylum and women fleeing domestic abuse and trafficking. 

The charity says with growing awareness of the initiative and the team seeing referrals coming in from outside of Harrogate, it has now launched a summer fundraising campaign to collect left over holiday cash. The money raised will enable the initiative to secure larger storage facilities and therefore help more families both in Harrogate and beyond.

The team will be collecting throughout August and September and have set up collection buckets around Harrogate in locations including:

  • Imagined Things bookshop in Westminster Arcade
  • Roots and Fruits on King Edwards Drive
  • The Secret Bakery on Knaresborough Road
  • The Hydro on Jennyfield Drive
  • The Post Office on Cambridge Road in the town centre.

New mother Nayrouz Mustafa was one of those who received support through Baby Basics Harrogate. She said:

"This basket made me very happy because it came as such a surprise. This basket full of so many beautiful things made me so happy. Never before has someone given me such a gift as this. When l saw this basket my feelings are very happy.

"Thank you to everybody who contributed to make this beautiful basket I feel very moved to know that people are thinking of me and my family and giving so much love."
