Everything you need to know if you want to watch the Tour de Yorkshire

Published at 8:01am 2nd May 2019. (Updated at 9:06am 2nd May 2019)

The 2019 Tour de Yorkshire gets underway today, with thousands of spectators expected to line the route and enjoy the four day cycling event.

So here's everything you need to know if you want to be one of them.

  • The race starts today and ends on Sunday
  • It's NOT in Harrogate, Craven and Wharfedale today or on Saturday, but we will get a piece of the action on Friday and Sunday
  • A number of events are planned for the towns and villages it'll pass through
  • Harrogate, Ripon, Skipton, Masham, Pateley Bridge and Otley are all included in the route

The race will not pass through Harrogate, Craven and Wharfedale today.

This stage will feature both the men and women's race. The women's race will feature Otley's very own former World Champion, Lizzie Deignan

The women get underway first in the morning, with the men's race coming afterwards and starting at around lunchtime.

The town will be busy with cycling fans all day and the womens' race is due at around 11.20am. Make sure you're there by no later than 3pm though as this is when the Tour de Yorkshire 'caravan' will get into the town.

The publicity caravan, a parade of 28 vehicles, will come before the men's race to build excitement among the crowds (and give away some freebies).

Cycling fans will also be able to meet some of the legends of the sport - Tour de Yorkshire Ambassadors - as they travel behind the cavalcade, greeting fans and posing for photographs.

With Harrogate set to host cycling's Road World Championships in September, this is a bit of a dry run.  The riders will do a circuit of Harrogate, the exact circuit that will be used during the championships.

There are events planned for Ripon throughout the day.

The city will be hosting a day of festivities on the market square. There'll be an artisan market, a climbing wall, street entertainment and a big screen showing the race live.

It'll also be a great place to watch. With just 21km to go until the finish, expect some drama as the riders try to get in a good position.

The caravan will get to Ripon by 3.45pm, with the men's race due at around

Harrogate, Craven and Wharfdale will miss out on the action as the coast takes centre stage.

With the women finishing on Saturday, the final day of the Tour de Yorkshire will feature the men's race only

The race will come through Skipton in the morning, but they'll be lots going on throughout the day.

The race also coincides with the Skipton Waterway Festival.

The riders will pass through Sutton-in-Craven and Cross Hills, and then up Skipton High Street at around 1.32pm. The caravan will arrive in Skipton at around 11.30am

Parking on Skipton High Street will be suspended from 10am on Sunday until the race passes through, and parking restrictions will also be in place across the length of the race route.

A popular spot to watch with cycling fans, Masham is also making a day of it.

There'll be an expanded market and farmers market in the Market Place. Cafes and pubs are offering outdoor food and local ales, hot drinks and picnic tables and the Church and Chapel will be open.

You'll also be able to watch the race on a big screen in the Market Square.

The publicity caravan will arrive just before 2pm, with the race due at 3.15pm.

After Masham the race heads to Kirby Malzeard for 3.30pm. The village has organised a big village party to celebrate the race with entertainment and activities planned.

Pateley Bridge

Pateley Bridge High Street is another popular spot to watch the race, and it won't disappoint.

Be ready for bunting, large crowds and a carnival atmosphere

There'll be lots going on throughout the day, including entertainment and music, with the publicity caravan arriving at 2.40pm

The riders will race down the High Street at around 3.45pm, before they head up the gruelling Greenhow Hill.

Dubbed "the cycling capital of the UK" and home of cycling legend Lizzie Deignan, there's no doubt there'll be a great atmosphere in Otley on Sunday.

The town's been decorated with themed flags and a special piece of ‘living’ field art will be on display by the entrance to the Otley Showground. The Stew and Oyster pub will be hosting a Tour de Yorkshire static ride to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Otley Boats will be operating on the River Wharfe throughout the weekend, and there will be a series of live music performances at the Woolpack Studios taking place between noon and 7pm.

The caravan arrives in Otley at 3.35pm, with the race due at around 4.30pm

With the cyclists taking on the unforgiving Otley Chevin, it's due to be another popular place to watch.
