A local chiropractor is urging men to seek advice earlier after revealing they are less likely than women to get medical help when feeling pain.

  • O'Connor Chiropractic in Harrogate want men to beat the "macho" stereotype and seek chiropractic care earlier.
  • Injuries are often aggravated before patients seek medical advice and men are less likely than women to get adjusted.

Stereotypically, men are more reluctant to seek medical health when feeling pain and, perhaps coincidentally, live 8 years less than women!

O'Connor Chiropractic Clinic in Harrogate and Ilkley have found that women tend to be better at getting checks and men often wait until crisis before seeking advice.

We spoke to O'Connor patients Keith and Jason about their own experiences with injuries and how chiropractic care helped them get back to doing what they love most...

Jason's Story

Jason suffered with back ache for around 2 years and was reliant on painkillers, taking them three or four times a day to fend off the pain.

As a barber, Jason spends most of his working day on his feet and his back pain was preventing him from doing his job. He sought help from a Sports Massage Therapist but saw no change.

O'Connor Chiropractic was a last resort for Jason, but after 9 months of adjustments he has already seen a dramatic difference:

"I can actually stand up straight and twist my torso without pain, but most importantly I can sleep at night.

"I used to toss and turn and not be able to sleep, but I'm 9 months down the line and things are much much better."

Jason was found to have chronic degeneration in both his neck and spine, causing weight imbalances and cardiovascular strain. O'Connor also found the main nerve supply to his prostate to be affected, causing him to go to the toilet more often.

"A lot of men might think it's because of their age that they're going to the toilet more and men come in with back pain as well as other challenges.

"I don't think people get that connection between the central nervous system and all the organs in the body."

As a barber, Jason spends most of his working day on his feet with his back and shoulders in different positions that may have ultimately contributed to his back pain.

Keith's Story

Keith hurt his back when squatting in the gym and was in so much pain that he was unable to walk.

Fearing he had a herniated disc, Keith was also having IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) symptoms and was feeling bloated a lot of the time, but like many men was reluctant to seek chiropractic help:

"I'm one of those classic people that I never go to a doctor or seek any medical health unless it's really serious.

"I researched the marketplace in terms of chiropractic care that was out there and what was important to me was someone that had the state-of-the-art equipment and services on site.

After his health check, Keith worked with O'Connor to discover the issue could stem back to a previous motorbike accident and not just to the incident in his gym.

"Since having all the tests not only is my lower back better, I can walk and I'm not hobbling, I've had no IBS related symptoms."

Metal weights
Although his back pain started when lifting weights in the gym, Keith discovered at O'Connor Chiropractic that the issue may have stemmed from a past motorbike accident.

O'Connor Chiropractic is holding a 'Men get checked' offer throughout June, with patients able to quote 'Stray' and get £50 off their comprehensive health check.
