Organisers of the Great Yorkshire Show are hoping that the Tour de France will boost visitor numbers.

England's premier agricultural event is taking place shortly after the Grand Départ and some race spectators are expected to spend a few extra days in the area.

Show Director Bill Cowling said: "It might open our show to people who haven't seen it before and who knows where that leads to?

"It will be a huge week for Harrogate and there's absolutely no doubt about that. I think Harrogate is going to be a massive beneficiary from both events."

Part of the showground will be used as car parks on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July.

Nigel Pulling, Chief Executive of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, said: "We were approached by the Tour organisers and were happy to help.

"We have made clear from the outset that our priority has to be the Great Yorkshire Show, so useage for the Grand Départ is subject to the ground conditions being appropriate."

The Tour also has implications for show exhibitors, particularly those bringing animals.

Mr Pulling (pictured) added: "We have taken this into account, and are opening the showground to exhibitors a day earlier than usual, on Friday 4 July. And we will be open for them 24 hours a day over the weekend."
