With the Winter harvest all but over, Riverford Organic are gearing up for typically the hardest time of the year for farmers as they look to provide for customers during the 'Hungry Gap.'

  • Riverford Organic Farmers have introduced wild garlic, purple broccoli and British asparagus to their boxes
  • The Hungry Gap occurs after Winter's crops have ended but before the following season's vegetables are ready to harvest
  • Riverford are also putting an emphasis on homegrown British produce due to the uncertainty surrounding Brexit

Riverford Organic are gearing up for the hardest period of the year for farmers as their Winter crops end but before next season's are ready to harvest, typically called the 'Hungry Gap.'

The fruit and veg home delivery service have introduced new items to their boxes including wild garlic, purple broccoli and British asparagus, as well as cauliflower and leeks.

With those who relied heavily on grown produce going hungry during this period, Riverford have worked on intelligent compromises to ensure their customers remain stocked up all-year round.

Riverford have also put a plan into place to get around the uncertainty surrounding Britain's imminent departure from the European Union by limiting their imported products and placing an emphasis on British produce.

"We're now at the point where there's a lot of planting going on, but not a lot of growing. It's going to be another 6-8 weeks before we start to get the real harvests.

"Politicians have said it's a good time of year to leave the EU, but it's not for us because we haven't got much growing in the fields. It will be around the middle of May before we start to see that first initial harvest of new potatoes and the like."

What is the Hungry Gap?

The Hungry Gap is typically the hardest time of the year for UK farmers and occurs in April, May and early June.

Farmers often struggle for produce after Winter crops have ended but before the new season's crops are ready to harvest.

During this time, and like the supermarkets, Riverford Organic typically rely more on imported produce to fill their fruit and vegetable boxes, but have had to compromise in the current political climate.
