To celebrate English Wine Week, independent supermarket Booths has been looking into what makes wine from our country so special.

  • English Wine Week is being celebrated 25th May - 2nd June 2019.
  • Last year, the UK wine industry produced over 15 million bottles (from England and Wales)
  • Sparkling white wine is considered the best having won lots of awards.

So how should we celebrate?

The Stray FM Food and Drink Show has teamed up with the local Booths stores in Ripon and Ilkley to bring you a few things you might not know about English wine...

English Wine Week at Ripon Booths 4
Steve and Melly look forward to welcoming you to Booths in Ripon!

The English Wine Industry is growing...

It's one of the world's fastest growing wine regions in fact!

There are now over 500 commercial vineyards in the UK and the area now 'under vine' has increased by over 160% in the last decade.

3 million vines were planted this year alone!

Sparkling wine is the winner

Of all the wine produced in England and Wales, over 70% of it is sparkling.

The English sparkling wine industry has even had investment from some seriously big boys in the game such as Tattinger

In fact, it has been known to beat champagne in a blind taste test!

And the good news... Booths knows a thing or two about coming up top at wine awards.

Yes... our weather can be problem

Frost, low temperatures, prolonged cloudy cover and unpredictable rainfall can make grape growing and wine production tricky.

Understandably... 2018 was  a good year!

The number of bottles produced in that year hit over 15 million, up from 5.5 million the previous year.

The South is doing better than the North

Largely down to the warmer weather in our Southern county cousins, this is what the breakdown looks like:

  • The North of England has 19 vineyards
  • The South-East of England has 152 vineyards
  • The South-West of England has 136 vineyards
  • Wales has 23 vineyards

Anyone else feel like getting competitive now?
