A specialist in-patient rehabilitation and recovery unit is getting ready to open in Ripon.

Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) says the £3.6 million unit will provide a much-improved facility and increased space for service users and staff.

The service was previously based at Abdale House, Harrogate, but the building is no longer fit for purpose.

The new unit contains nine en-suite bedrooms, a single bedsit-style apartment and a range of modern facilities to assist with daily living skills, as well as a number of group rooms and visitor accommodation.

It also provides a community service base which will house the area's Early Intervention in Psychosis team and North Yorkshire County Council's local Community Rehabilitation Team.

Adele Coulthard, Director of Operations for TEWV in North Yorkshire, said: "We care for people with severe and complex mental health problems. Our focus is to work with them to improve their quality of life and help them develop the skills to live as independently as possible, whilst supporting them on their road to recovery.

"The Orchards will enable us to provide assessment, care planning, treatment and recovery in a warm, safe and homely environment and will help prepare our service users for community integration and ultimately to them leading a more independent life."

The Orchards will open on Thursday 16 July.
