Harrogate charity launches fundraising campaign

Solicitors are offering people the chance to make a will in exchange for a donation to Saint Michael's Hospice in Harrogate.

As part of the charity's Make a Will Month campaign, Grahame Stowe Bateson, Greenwoods, Hutchinson and Buchanan, LCF Barber Titleys, McCormicks, Steel and Co and Stowe Family Law will all waive their usual fees.

Tony Collins, Chief Executive of Saint Michael's, said: "For many of us, making a will is a subject we'd rather not think about, but setting our affairs in order now can make life much easier for our loved ones later.

"We want to give local people the opportunity to make or amend their will as part of an initiative which is simple, straightforward and offers peace of mind.

"What's more, with one in two people touched by hospice care, you'll gain the rewarding knowledge that your Make a Will Month donation has made a real difference to someone right here in the Harrogate District.

"For example, a donation of just £160 - less than the average cost of making a will - could help Saint Michael's to visit five more people living with a terminal illness, supporting them to stay in their own home for as long as possible."

Clare Ray, from Harrogate, is one of the people who has already signed up to the scheme.

She said: ''I had already made my will, but now my daughter's circumstances have changed and I have a 10-month old grandson, I realised I needed to update things.

"Make a Will Month is an easy way for me to sort the important things out and make sure everything is taken care of the way I want. I get the added satisfaction of knowing my donation will have a positive impact on the lives of local people living with terminal illness.''

Make a Will Month runs throughout April, but appointments are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
