Imagine life as an 85 year old... You still live in your own home, somewhere you've lived for a long time, and after an active life you're very keen to remain independent for as long as possible. After a stroke a few years ago, combined with cataracts, your vision isn't great. And with arthritis in your hands, your ability to grip, feel and hold things can make simple tasks a bit tricky. It's not that you need full time care, but a little bit of extra help really does make the day easier for you.

If you close your eyes, it's possible to imagine yourself in that scenario, but Home Instead likes to take it one step further by actually simulating it. As well as the simple "Mum Test" (would I be happy for this person to take care of my Mum?), new staff at Home Instead are given a couple of pairs of glasses, some adapted rubber gloves and a few simple tasks to do, to truly feel like you're in the shoes of someone else.

This on top of all the incredible work that Home Instead do, meant that they were awarded the Queens Enterprise Innovation award last year.

Andrew and Sheena Van Parys from Home Instead put Stray FM's Beth Parsons through her paces on the Health and Wellbeing Show and explained what makes them different from many other home care companies.
