Every three seconds a new case of dementia is reported across the world.

Home Instead are an award winning provider of care at home services to elderly people in Harrogate, Thirsk and Ripon, particuarly when helping people living with Alzheimer's, and other forms of dementia, have some simple tips that can really help with one on one support. Andrew Van Parys explains a few of them.

  • Make decisions more simple - rather than "What would you like to eat?" perhaps give a simple choice such as "Would you like a cheese sandwich or a ham sandwich?"
  • During a conflict take the heat out of the situation - take the blame and apologise even if it wasn't your fault.
  • Redirect a situation if it seems to be causing stress - change the subject,  move to a different area or take certain items away from sight.
  • Keep someone engaged but involving them in activities. Sometimes by starting a task yourself they may follow and joining in.
  • Encourage independence, but give instructions in short simple stages  - rather than "Make a cup of tea" start with "Fill the kettle up first".
  • Appear to someones better nature by asking for help with something.

Beth Parsons from Stray FM's Health and Wellbeing Show went to meet Andrew and Sheena Van Parys at Home Instead along with Kirsty, Elizabeth and Francis who attended a friends and family session as part of Dementia Awareness Week.
