Manorlands hospice needs your help

Manorlands Hospice, West Yorkshire

Published at 1:00am 2nd February 2018.

Manorlands is a Sue Ryder hospice, based in West Yorkshire, which provides care for people facing a frightening, life-changing diagnosis.

The hospice cares for people aged 18 and over living with conditions like cancer, heart failure, acquired brain injury and lung disease.

One in four people are currently living with a life-changing condition.

Manorlands is after help, whether it's volunteering, running a fundraising event or making a donation, so that it can carry on supporting others who need it across Craven and Wharfedale.

The hospice costs £3,300,000 to run every year.

That is why it needs your help in raising money and awareness.

Facts

  • There are approximately 152,000 strokes in the UK every year; that is one every 3 minutes 27 seconds, but there are over 1.2m stroke survivors in the UK. Stroke is one of the largest causes of disability. Over a third of stroke survivors in the UK are dependent on others, of those one in five are cared for by family and/or friends.
  • 50% of adult cancer patients are likely to survive 10 years or more.
  • 225,000 people develop dementia every year in the UK. 7 out of 10 people are living with another medical condition or disability as well as dementia.
  • Around 100,000 people have multiple sclerosis in the UK.
  • 127,000 people are living with Parkinson's disease in the UK today.

Karen works at Manorlands in Keighley, and explains why: "I have been experienced the care Manorlands hospice provides for my own family members and I know the importance of the care we provide both at the hospice and out in the community.

"In November 2010 my wonderful grandma unfortunately passed away at Manorlands Hospice. Prior to this my aunt had also passed away at the hospice.

"When the time came for grandma to leave us, we continued to get the support we needed through the family support team who provided us with bereavement support.

"I can hand on heart say that without Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice our experience at losing one of the most important people in our lives would have been so much harder to cope with. This time in my life was without a doubt when I knew I wanted to work in this area."

"The care we received was free! We did not have to pay a penny, but we found out that while the hospice received some statutory funding they still had to raise over £1m to keep the hospice running.

"We really need a fundraising group in Ilkley and surrounding villages to help the Ilkley and Craven area contribute towards the care we provide here.

"Basically anything people want to do we would be so grateful!"

Sue Ryder's Manorlands hospice care is available to people living in Craven, Airevalley, and Wharfedale.
