Knees, elbows, shoulders... if you get injured or even undergo surgery, skipping your physiotherapy could be an un-fixable mistake.

Ever been guilty of not attending your physio appointment or not doing the exercises advised to you? Chances are you're setting yourself up for either a slow recovery or some pretty painful consequences.

When Mary from Harrogate underwent one total knee replacement in July 2013 and then a further partial knee replacement in July 2017 she understood that it had to happen in order for her to continue living life to the full. A keen skier and with lively grandchildren being able to stay active was vital.

After both sets of surgery Mary went to see Sarah Joice from Peak Physiotherapy, Clinical Director and  Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at one of their five clinics in West Yorkshire.

Treatment on knee at Peak Physiotherapy

After only 6 months post-operation, Mary was back to skiing and owes a huge part of her recovery to the services at Peak Physiotherapy thanks to Sarah Joice!

It might be tempting to see physiotherapy as an after thought - once the surgery has been completed you're pretty much sorted - but missing out on such a critical part of recovery can result in some long term debilitating effects.

As Sarah Joice explains "we do sometimes get people who come to us chronically when they haven't followed the advice that's been given or maybe haven't started physiotherapy early enough and what you tend to find is they have a lot of compensation. So rather than treating the actual injury you spend a lot of time treating other associated issues that have developed and that can actually take more time than if they'd got cracking with the treatment in the early stages."
