Who are the happiest people in the UK?

A new University study of more than 8,000 people has proven that people who run are happier than the general population.

The study has also shown that the running community has a significant positive effect on people's mental health - so for a boost in self confidence, body image, motivation and happiness, grab your trainers!

With weekly events in Wetherby, Fountains Abbey, and Harrogate, an easy way to get started on a run is with a ParkRun. Free, fun, and easy to enter, the event has become known for building a community of runners wherever one pops up.

A 5k run is a great place to start. The NHS even offers guidance to get you from the couch to 5k, the length of a ParkRun, in just 9 weeks. Supported by their podcasts or companion app, it could be a great place to start the journey to better health and happiness.

You can hear more about running your way to happiness as Stray FM's Alice Sofield speaks with Jo Pavey, the five-time Olympian and author of This Mum Runs, and Ian Young, a former soldier, PTSD sufferer and Invictus Games competitor:
