To celebrate World Acupuncture Day Harrogate based acupuncturist Matt Symonds has been explaining how it can help a range of health problems.

The first every World Acupuncture Day takes places on Thursday 15th November 2018, but how much do you really know about acupuncture?

What is acupuncture?

Becoming increasingly popular in the UK, acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine in which very thin needles are inserted into specific areas of the body, stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles. This results in the increase of the bodies natural ability to produce chemicals such pain relieving endorphins. Often a course of acupuncture treatment with regular appointments has more long term benefits than a single session.

The fear of needles can often impact peoples desire to have acupuncture, but as the needles are so fine (0.0032 inches... about the width of a strand of hair!) there is very little pain involved.

Usually sitting or lying down during treatment and following a full consultation with a professional, the needles are left in place for a set length of time ranging from as little as a few minutes to half an hour. Generally acupuncture treatments with Matt Symonds in Harrogate take around 90 minutes for an initial appointment, and then 45 minutes from then on.
